"The only thing that's keeping you from getting what you want is the story you keep telling yourself." - Tony Robbins
Getting out of your own way is essential for achieving clarity. Unfortunately, many of us struggle to do so. We are often our own worst enemies, standing in the way of our own success. We hold ourselves back with negative self-talk, perfectionism, procrastination, and self-criticism. These obstacles can make it difficult to focus on our goals and take action toward achieving them. However, by identifying and overcoming these obstacles, we can achieve clarity and reach our full potential.
Identifying and overcoming self-imposed obstacles:
One of the most common obstacles that people face when trying to achieve clarity is self-imposed obstacles. These are obstacles that we create for ourselves through our thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors. Negative self-talk, perfectionism, and procrastination are all examples of self-imposed obstacles that can hold us back. To overcome these obstacles, we must first identify them. Ask yourself, "What is holding me back?" Once you have identified the obstacle, you can then take action to overcome it.
Strategies for overcoming self-imposed obstacles include:
Mindfulness: Paying attention to your thoughts and feelings in the present moment can help you to identify negative self-talk and other obstacles.
Positive self-talk: Instead of focusing on your shortcomings, try to focus on your strengths.
Setting realistic goals: Make sure your goals are achievable and that you have a plan for achieving them.
Letting go of perfectionism:
Perfectionism is another common obstacle that can hold us back from achieving clarity. Perfectionists often struggle with overthinking and procrastination, which can make it difficult to take action. To overcome these obstacles, you must learn to let go of perfectionism and focus on progress over perfection. It is a long, hard road to really being able to focus on the things you can control versus the things you cannot, but it is one we must all take if we want to get out of our own way and allow ourselves to be our happy, and allow ourselves to perform at our best.
Strategies for letting go of perfectionism include:
Setting realistic expectations: Recognize that no one is perfect and that it's okay to make mistakes.
Focusing on progress over perfection: Instead of focusing on being perfect, focus on making progress towards your goals.
Learning to accept failure: Failure is a natural part of life. It is an opportunity to learn and grow.
Letting go of self-criticism
Self-criticism is another obstacle that can hold us back from achieving clarity. We often give ourselves a hard time for not being good enough, or for not doing things the right way. This negative self-talk can lead to a lack of self-confidence and make it difficult to take action. It can even lead to us losing all passion for things we once loved. To overcome this obstacle, you must learn to let go of self-criticism and replace it with self-compassion.
Strategies for letting go of self-criticism include:
Mindfulness: Again mindfulness plays a key role in dealing with self-criticism. Paying attention to your thoughts and feelings in the present moment can help you to identify negative self-talk and other obstacles, and consciously let go of them.
Self-compassion: Instead of being hard on yourself, try to be kind and understanding.
Seeking constructive feedback from others: Instead of relying on your own judgment, seek feedback from others. This can be a huge help: rather than being your own judge (of which we are a terrible one), leave it up to a trusted advisor. Whether that be a coach, parent, friend or team mate, by handing over judgement to someone else, we can free ourselves to just do our thing.
Getting out of your own way literally means taking a mental step back and allowing yourself to simply perform, free from thoughts and judgements. When we are constantly judging and critiquing ourselves, it can be difficult to focus on the task at hand. Our mind becomes cluttered with self-doubt and negative thoughts, which can impede our performance. By taking a mental step back, we can detach ourselves from the thoughts and judgements that are holding us back. This allows us to be more present in the moment and to simply perform to the best of our ability. It's like when you are playing a sport and you are in the zone, you're not thinking about anything else except what you need to do next. You are just performing. This is the state of mind we should aim for when trying to achieve clarity.
Getting out of your own way is essential for achieving clarity. By identifying and overcoming self-imposed obstacles, letting go of perfectionism, letting go of self-criticism, and practicing mindfulness, we can detach ourselves from the thoughts and judgements that are holding us back. It's also important to remember that getting out of your own way means taking a mental step back and allowing yourself to simply perform, free from thoughts and judgements. Pass the judgement over to a trusted advisor and allow yourself to simply do your thing. The road to achieving clarity is not always easy, but with the right mindset and strategies, we can break through the obstacles that are holding us back and reach our full potential. Remember, as Zig Ziglar said, "You are the only person on earth who can use your ability." So, don't let anything or anyone stop you from achieving your goals and living the life you want.
Hope this one helps.
